Autumn 1- Philosophy for Children / Faith in Action 

During the first half term the school will be working with the Philosophy for Children project and developing our skills of questioning, debate and open dialogue with our peers.  We will be using books, our own experiences and current affairs as starting points for our philosophical thinking.  This will feed into our ongoing school project - the UNicef Rights Respecting programme which allows children to think about their role in society, explore their rights and related responsibilities. This links with our whole school study of ‘Faith in Action’, exploring the work that individuals and organisations do around the world to help others.

Autumn 2- Christmas

Throughout the school the children will be learning about different aspects of the Christmas story. We start in the Foundation Stage with looking at Christmas as a birthday and linking this to our own experiences. We then move on to looking at how Christmas is a Christian Festival in Year 1 and why such importance is placed on this time of year. In Year 2 we begin to look at symbolism in the Christmas story and start by looking at the importance of light moving on in Year 3 to learn about the gifts of the Magi* and how they symbolise future events in Jesus’ life. In Year 4 we look at the journeys made in the Christmas story and explore the importance of the journey made by the Magi to visit the Jesus and the Holy Family’s journey to Egypt under God’s protection. Year 5 begin to look in detail at the people involved with this story and begin to empathise with them at different stages in the story. They also begin to compare the Biblical account of the Christmas story with modern day interpretations and Nativity plays. In Year 6 they begin to identify how their own learning about the Christmas narrative and the needs of the homeless and refugees challenges and inspires their personal thoughts as they prepare to celebrate Christmas.

Spring 1- World Religions

During this half term each class study a world religion and begin to compare it with other world faiths. In the Foundation Stage we look at the Biblical account of the creation story and study ‘God’s Wonderful World’. In Year 1 we continue to look at Christianity and begin to explore other world religions and begin to draw very simple comparisons between them. In Year 2 we study Islam and look at how Muslims worship all around the world. In Year 3 we look at Hinduism and begin to compare this to other world religions such as Christianity and Islam. Year 4 explore Buddhism and with prior knowledge of other faiths make a comparative study between Buddhists beliefs and those of Christianity and Islam. In Year 5 we begin to explore Sikhism and the similarities and differences there are between its practices and those in Hinduism and Christianity. When we reach Year 6 we study in detail the Jewish way of life and compare this to all the world religions, looking at the common roots of Judaism, Islam and Christianity and compare these with the other world religions. We will also explore religions practised within the class to make the learning relevant to the children and to encourage an inclusive approach to RE learning.

Spring 2- Easter

Like with Christmas, during this period each class explore a different aspect of the Easter story. In the Foundation Stage we look at how Easter is representative of new beginnings and how we can see this all around us in our natural environment. In Year 1 we look at the symbols in the Easter story, what they represent and why we think they are used. In Year 2 we look at how Easter is celebrated in the Church and spend time at St Margaret’s talking with the parish about special events that take place over the Easter time. In Year 3 we look in more detail at the events surrounding the Easter story and how they led up to the key events in the Easter week, whilst Year 4 look at the people involved in the story, the roles they played and how they had impacted the events within the Easter week. In Year 5 we begin to understand the differences and similarities in eye witness accounts of events and relate to the Easter narrative which was written after events had taken place, whilst deepening our own personal views on life and death. Finally in Year 6 we look at the effect Jesus’ final week on earth had on people at the time and make connections with how Christians relate to Jesus to-day whilst listening to different points of view about what can be learnt about Easter for today.

Summer 1 and 2- Jesus versus Bible Heroes!

In the summer term we carry out a comparative study from lessons that can be learnt from the teachings of Jesus in the New Testament and those from the stories of the Bible Heroes in the Old Testament. This works in a 2 year cycle so that by the end of 2 years the children will have a comprehensive understanding of both the New and Old Testament. explore what we can learn from their experiences with God and how they shape up with one another when we make Bible Hero top trumps! In Key Stage 1 we will be using the Story Keepers resource to help the children gather an understanding of various stories from the Bible, bringing it to life through active and engaging activities that help the children empathise and question the actions of various Bible heroes. In Key Stage 2 we will be using the Into the Bible resource to allow the children to delve into the biblical text, analyse and explore the themes that applicable to their day to day and discuss how they can live their life drawing from themes found in the Bible.

Christian ethos and church links – As a Church of England school, we have links with St Margaret’s Church on Lee Terrace. Father Alan Race leads collective worship across the year and the children visit the church throughout the year for important dates on the Christian calendar. Our Christian ethos permeates the school. Each half term, we focus on a particular Christian value, which forms a part of our collective worship (assembly) and class RE lessons.
