Preparing Children for life in Modern Britain
We work hard to provide the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences that will prepare them for life in modern Britain. At St Margaret’s Lee, these values are reinforced regularly and in the following ways:
Children have many opportunities for their voices to be heard. We have a school council and the pupils have regular opportunities to shape their experiences. All children have the opportunity to talk to senior staff on a regular basis and use these occasions to share their views. Our involvement in the CBBC Vote for Me series really highlighted the relevance and importance of democracy!
The Rule of Law:
The importance of laws, whether they be those that govern the class, the school, or the country, are consistently reinforced at St Margaret’s Lee. Pupils are taught the value and reasons behind laws, that they govern and protect us, the responsibilities that these involve and the consequences when laws are broken. Visits from the police and fire service as well as our Year 6 attending junior citizen events help to reinforce this message.
Within school, pupils are actively encouraged to make choices, knowing that they are in a safe and supportive environment. As a school we educate and provide boundaries for young pupils to make choices safely, through the provision of a safe environment and clearly articulated choices. Pupils are encouraged to know, understand and exercise their rights and personal freedoms and are advised how to exercise these safely, for example through our E-Safety sessions or through the school values. Whether it be through choice of challenge in lessons, of how they record responses, of participation in our extra-curricular clubs and opportunities, pupils are given the freedom to make choices.
At St Margaret’s Lee, we teach the children the importance of respecting each other, regardless of age, ability or belief. We teach the children to show courtesy and good manners to adults and each other and reinforce how this contributes towards the quality of life at school and at home. The children are proactive in designing their own learning and understand that the staff team respect them for taking on this responsibility. We are currently working as a school on the Unicef Rights Respecting Schools Programme.
Tolerance of those of Different Faiths and Beliefs:
This is achieved through enhancing pupils’ understanding of their place in a culturally diverse society and by giving them opportunities to experience such diversity. Our children visit St Margaret’s church throughout the year. They are also given opportunities to visit other faith centres, such as mosques and synagogues.

We will teach our pupils the importance of equality and what forms discrimination can take and the impact discrimination can have.
We will not discriminate on any of the grounds listed below (known as the Protected Characteristics) save where such discrimination is permitted by law. Examples of permitted discrimination are:
1. The school may arrange pupils in classes based on age.
2. The school may take positive action to deal with particular disadvantages affecting pupils of one racial group if this is a proportionate means of dealing with the issue.
The Protected Characteristics that apply to schools are:
• Age (in relation to staff only);
• Gender re-assignment;
• Marriage and civil partnership (in relation to staff only);
• Pregnancy and Maternity;
• Religion Faith or Belief;

• Sexual orientation.
As a Governing Body and employer we will also not accept any of the following:
• Direct or Indirect Discrimination;
• Harassment; and
We will comply with the Public Sector Equality Duty giving due regard to that duty when making decisions, taking actions and developing policies. In line with its specific duties under the Equality Act 2010, we will publish our equality objectives which are updated every four years.
